Description

Good practice objective, aim, context
The TLC Pack project focuses on ‘occupational specific language resources’ to support migrants already working in, or with aspirations to work in, the care giving sector. It has been determined that this is one of the primary employment opportunities for migrant workers across Europe. The course is freely accessible from the website and available also for self-learners

Coverage
Being developed as a European project, the materials cover the needs of the five countries Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands. All of them have a substantial number of refugees and migrants who ask for integration in the labour market. Moreover, these are ageing societies where there is a (future) need for caregivers.

Actors and target group
Migrants already working in, or with aspirations to work in, the care giving sector in Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands.

Methodological approach
There is a language course comprising of 6 units with 30 dialogues, videos and exercises as well as 1 intercultural unit for learning languages on level A2 – B2 for English, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Greek. The course is freely accessible from the website and available also for self-learners. There are many interactive exercises where the learners can improve and assess their language skills.
The migrants working in the sector of caregiving may not have the opportunity to attend a regular languages course. This online self-learning course is available 24/7 on the internet and could also be used to prepare for the job, already from the home country.

Validation
The successfully piloted in all project countries. Moreover, an external evaluator was foreseen in the project design. Her report was very positive on these innovative materials.

Results
There is a language course comprising of 6 units with 30 dialogues, videos and exercises as well as 1 intercultural unit for learning languages on level A2 – B2 for English, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Greek.

Impact
The project covers 6 important foreign languages in Europe and the website with the course materials is also accessible for self-learning from outside the partnership countries or even Europe. Many of the caregivers in Europe come e.g. from Poland, Romania, states of the Former Soviet Union or Asia.

Innovation
The partners were encouraged by the positive feedback during the pilots and dissemination events that there are only very few language learning materials that focus on vocational skills and knowledge in the caregiver sector.

Success factors
Due to the fact that the materials were developed in cooperation between language specialists and experts from the caregiver sector, the resources have a high relevance for the daily activities in the job.

Replicable
It would be possible to add more languages to the platform. Furthermore a transfer to other important jobs could be initiated.

Testimony
The project was awarded with the EAEA Grundtvig Award 2016, for the category European projects. http://www.eaea.org/en/home/news/eaea-grundtvig-award-2016-goes-to-st.-andrews-refugee-services-tlc-pack-and-idcirs-projects.html

Conclusions
The innovative approach of combining language learning with the occupational specific language for the levels A2 – B2 for six European is valuable to be a Good Practice on European level.
